Starting a new glass bead jewelry making project, but unsure of the colors to select? Choosing glass bead color for jewelry making can be overwhelming because of the variety of choices. There are as many colors as the rainbow can provide, and on top of that you must choose shapes, materials and style. Keep in mind a few of these beading color basics and you will be sure to be creating beautiful pieces you can be proud to call your own.

Pick Color With The End Result In Mind

It’s easy to get lost in the details, but it is important to take a step back when choosing the colors for your jewelry project. Take into consideration more than just the finished piece, but also what emotion you are trying to convey, and what clothes you see yourself wearing it with. If you are looking to make an elegant impression, dark, rich, warm glass bead colors provide additional impact. If the jewelry project you are considering is more playful, consider more wild colors to let your personality shine through.

Use Bead Patterns as A Guide – Not A Rule

When making glass beaded jewelry, patterns can be an incredible aid. They can keep you focused and organize your process to get you started. It is important to remember that the pattern is a recommendation, try not to fall into using it as a crutch that you cannot vary from. The easiest way to vary and create truly unique glass bead masterpieces is to experiment with different beading colors and shapes. Alternate how you use the project patterns and let your instincts guide you in new creative directions of pattern and color.

You Can Always Turn Back The Clock on Color

The best thing about glass bead jewelry making is that there is no such thing as a wrong decision, and it is easy to correct any choices you are not happy with. Allow yourself to attempt creative color patterns, or choose bold colors you could not normally picture yourself wearing. You can always go back and replace glass beads with different colors if you are not satisfied with the end project. When choosing your bead project colors, don’t hold yourself back, but rather, trust your judgement, you can always go back and correct any mistakes.

This is a question I asked myself; my friends had the same response. What is the Portland Bead Society all about?

My first experience with the Portland Bead Society was far more than I could have imagined or expected. This group of creative, warm, funny artists welcomed a total stranger to their meeting this last Tuesday evening. As I expected, there is quite a cross section of society. Young and young at heart, folks who make their living selling beads, women whose lives revolve around the creative process of bead design and are professional artists and people who just like to get in there and create just for their own enjoyment. One thing they all had in common was a creative place to meet with others who share the same passion.

One thing that stood out for me was that many of the members of this group have participated regularly for many years. Fifteen, twenty years was not uncommon. That in itself amazed me. Beyond that, I have been around groups made up predominately of women and if you are the “Newbie”, you barely get a glance, much less a smile. That was far from the case here. I was actually “Welcomed”! I have to admit, I was not really prepared for that kind of response. I was feeling a bit shy, but once I was welcomed by several of the women, I felt I had found a place where I might actually belong. I was invited to introduce myself and tell a little bit about why I was there. I can only hope that they were pleased to hear that I want to learn and tell their stories.

As I have said before, “Everyone has a story”. These women did not disappoint me. I came away with more stories in three hours than I could have dreamed of. The most wonderful part of this is that I have only scratched the surface. There was not enough time in the evening to talk to everyone. In fact, because the stories are so colorful, I was only able to talk to a few. The PBS, as it is known, has a retreat coming up and I was invited by several of the members. This event has been bringing bead designers from the Portland area to the Oregon Coast for seven years now. I definitely got the drift that they are very much looking forward to getting away and hanging out with their creative counterparts.

I was lucky to attend the night that Teresa Sullivan was speaking to the group. A guest speaker is scheduled for every meeting. Teresa is a PBS member and has been for many years. She is also a professional artist. Her work is Sculpture Jewelry and she brings a sense of whimsy with her art. Teresa has her work showing right now at the Mesa Art Center in Arizona. Old comic books and garage sale finds have a significant presence in her work. I highly recommend you go to her website, www.teresasullivanstudio.com and take a look.

Education on new techniques and the celebration of creativity is what drives this group along with their desire to make an impact on the world. My first night as a member they were voting on how to spend the money that they work so hard for. They have two big fundraisers every year, one being their Art & Elegance in Beads at the Oregon Convention Center, April 30 thru May 2. I have personally attended this show for many years. It is in conjunction with several other art shows at the same venue. I highly recommend attending if you haven’t had the opportunity in the past. Their other event comes November 6 & 7 in the form of their Annual Bead Bazaar. If being overwhelmed by beads is what you are looking for, this is a great place to check out.

What should they do with the money that they have worked so hard for at these fundraising events? They give back! I was very pleased and impressed that it is not just about the art. This group can see how they can make a difference in many ways.

There is a beautiful woman named Bobbye Brown who is a founding member of PBS. In her spare time she has been given the opportunity to teach about bead design and history from all over the world. She goes into schools and teaches children, she goes to senior citizen homes and anywhere else she may have an audience. She will be taking her “show” to the Gem Faire in Hillsboro, Oregon in March. What makes Bobbye so special is that she tells me that she never planned any of this. She started with a little interest and it blossomed into a passion. The Portland Bead Society knows that what Bobbye, better known as “The Bead Lady” by her students and friends, has learned over the years needs to be documented and cataloged. It was voted to help her do just that and she will be getting funds to help her knowledge become a part of the history of the society. Her collection, one that has grown over the years with the help of friends, will be preserved as it should be.

PBS knows that art can change a life or at the very lease enhance someone’s existence. They voted to help several other groups that attend to the needs of young adults and women who have been battered, living in shelters. Volunteers go into the shelter and teach the art of bead design and help these people make things that will surely bring joy to their trying lives.

Beyond these personal stories of philanthropy, funds are also going to The Bead Museum in Glendale, Arizona and to a gentleman who will be traveling to Taiwan to collect beads for historical purposes.

I can personally say that I know why a group such as the Portland Bead Society exists. Isn’t it wonderful that something as small as a bead can make a difference in the world?

Their colors range from a pale orange to a reddish orange to a dark brown orange. It has a hardness of 7 on the Moh’s scale. These stones could be found in many different shapes; however, the most common would be the oval shape. These stones could be principally mined from Russia, the US, Madagascar, Australia, and Brazil, among the many other countries.

Its name has been derived from a Latin word which means horn, which is actually in reference to the occasional flesh hue that it exhibits. Carnelian was widely used during the Roman times some two thousand years ago in making seal rings or signets for imprinting seals with wax for important documents or correspondence, as hot wax do not stick on to carnelian.

Some people believe that it has quite a couple of holistic properties. It has been said that it has the ability to improve an individual’s outlook in life. It could also cleanse the blood and assist in the process of healing in wounds. They are also known to hold power in the afterlife.

Stone beads made with carnelian are found in a beautiful mix of natural exquisiteness and fine handcrafting. As these beads are carved, extreme care is crucial to ensure that its beauty would be intact. There is a small amount of iron oxide in it and due to that, the beads which are made from it have a reddish color.

A glass bead is an element of jewellery that really stands out when one wears it in any fashion, be it on the wrist, the neck or even on an anklet. So, whether or not your dreams are actually made of glass beads, you can sure to look dreamy when you wear them!

Well, a glass bead has been a prominent feature in jewellery for quite some time now, yet recently they have come into fashion, chiefly because of the quality of the craftsmanship that goes into them…also, the fact that every young celeb worth their salt wears them doesn’t hurt their public image either!

So, the question that must be on your lips now is, seeing as these elements of jewellery are so stylish and worn by all these young, hip celebs, then wear can I get my hands on a set of glass beads?

Well, the best place to source and buy these beads is definitely, without a shadow of a doubt, on the internet; on the world wide web you can find offers and deals that outshine so many of the bargains that high street stores boast, so get clicking straight away!

Due to the fact that you can get these beads fairly cheaply, you can afford to get a few more than you would if you were just buying them from a shop, so it is for this reason that you should invest in a fair amount of them, so that you have one for every day of the week!

Seriously though, glass these are one of those styles of jewellery that really lends itself to quantity as well as quality; if you put a few of these bracelets on your wrist, then you can really vamp up your style.

So, for those of you out there who don’t think that clutter is necessarily a bad thing when it comes to jewellery, then you can really go for it when it comes to fitting as many glass beads as you can on your arm; conversely, if you think that less is definitely more, a few delicately placed glass beads about your person can really make your outfit stand out.

Well, there we have it, a glass bead can fit into pretty much anybody’s style and outfit choices, no matter what they may be, so there is nothing left fr you to do now other than get the credit card out and ordering some beads to be delivered straight to your door!

Ok, so you’ve had the rest, now you want the best. If this best that you are referring to is the best piece of jewellery, then look no further than a good piece of bead jewellery, as this ticks all the boxes required when it comes to a glamorous, versatile and (most importantly) affordable pieces of jewellery.

Beads have been an interesting element in fashion for quite some time, yet they have only ever been on the outskirts of fashion, the peripherals of style; until now, that is. Whereas a few years ago beads were usually seen hanging from the limbs of spaced out hippie-chicks and gap year students who had just arrived back from their totally unique round-the-world travelling experience, all sporting identical bead necklaces that they each bought at neighbouring stalls in a street in Koh Samui, they are now quickly becoming a centre piece in many leading style icons’ outfits.

The great thing about beads is how versatile they are; a single bead hanging from a choker can give out a wonderfully

desolate, teen angst feel, whereas a bunched up bracelet spilling out with beads gives off a carefree, fun-loving lifestyle, one that many will want to get involved in.

Many celebs have been spotted wearing beads as a part of their outfit; pioneers of the bead loving genre of jewellery are Lindsay Lohan, Kate Moss and Joss Stone, each using beads to complement their own unique and wonderful style.

But hold on a second; if these A-listers are wearing beads, then surely they must cost an arm and a leg to purchase and are well out of the price ranges of mere mortals? Well, this is where many people are mistaken; if you buy your beads from websites that sell bead jewellery, generous discounts are offered on some already very reasonable prices, allowing you to buy as many beads as your heart desires!

Concurrently, as beads are so cheap to purchase, it allows you to buy a lot more than you would usually purchase, would they be regular jewellery at regular prices; but what to do with all these beads? Well, given the nature of bead jewellery, many beads can be swapped on different pieces of jewellery, allowing you to create an infinite amount of new looks and styles with

the same amount of beads…so, with all this information, the only question left is, what are you waiting for?

In scanning the current fashion trends, I am seeing tons of beads, baubles and chains, not to mention sweet charms of all sorts.

At Ralph Lauren, Oscar de la Renta, Lanvin, and Chanel each designer is showing beads, chains and baubles in layer on top of layer. They are having fun with their jewelry; mixing different mediums together to make a very bold statement. Creating looks that everyone can wear.

In addition to famous design houses, places like White House/Black Market, Chico’s, Coach, Express and American Eagle are getting in on the act; offering gorgeous affordable options. Twist, a local jewelry store in Portland Oregon, is supporting handmade jewelry as are many of the galleries in the city. It seems that bead designs are here to stay and can be found everywhere from the mall to the neighborhood outdoor marketplace.

Probably the most visible woman sporting a beaded necklace daily is Robin Roberts of Good Morning America. Her sister, Dorothy Roberts McEwen has kept us admiring beaded necklaces for quite some time. Have you ever seen the same necklace on Robin twice? They are usually quite simple bead designs, but Dorothy has a real talent for putting the different elements together.

Pearls are big this year! The most wonderful part of the ‘new’ pearls is COLOR. We have gone past the days of the simple Jackie Onassis pearl strand, as timeless and classic as it is. The ‘new’ pearls are showing up in all shades and variations; white, pink, purple, copper, chocolate, green, and blue……….you name it. You have the luster of a traditional pearl, but the option of fun new shapes, sizes and colors.

Charms with names and sayings such as “loved”, “courage” and “believe” are hot right now. You see them incorporated into necklaces and bracelets mixed with beads of all types. Tom Binns, has created whimsical pieces for the new upcoming movie “Alice in Wonderland”; styling each piece with 29 character charms inspired by the movie which can be seen in the March edition of InStyle Magazine.

What makes this season so much fun is that the rules have been thrown out. I am so glad that we can now wear pearls with turquoise, wooden beads with Swarovski crystals and all sorts of beads of every shape, color and size. Crystals add a new dimension to the more organic colors and textures of the different mine finds. What’s better than being able to find every stone you could imagine from Red Jasper to African Jade? Beads are readily available in smooth cut or faceted and every shape you would need for your next project. Hand made glass beads bring brilliant colors and designs to the bead world that cannot be found anywhere else.

We should all take a look at the fashion trends for this spring and summer, head out to our local bead emporium and come up with some fun and exciting bead designs of our own. Get charged up about the endless possibilities and find your creative self.

Happy beading,

The last week of October is Beads Weekin Ghana in West Africa. Exporting beads has become a major source of income for many in poverty stricken areas of Africa, besides being a major source of cultural exchange between Ghana and Italy and other European countries.

Ghana and Italy have long been linked in history. As early as the 15th century, makers of glass beads began shipping their products to Ghana in Western Africa. The beads were important for increasing the status of Chiefs and Queens and were used in ceremonies that marked rites of passage. Italy and Ghana were united by the common language of artistic beauty and their love of the tiny masterpieces.

Now, in a reversal, West Africa is beginning to export locally made beads to back to Italy.

In another part of Africa, Uganda has a thriving bead export business. Paper beads in all sizes and shapes are helping Ugandan women to rise out of poverty. Women in many parts of Africa have few economic opportunities and in Uganda, women are fleeing the civil war and settling near the Ugandan capital, Kampala. Instead of finding a brighter future, they found HIV, starvation and expensive housing. There is hope for these women-Bead For Life.

The organization called BeadForLife began when two American women watched a Ugandan woman making beads from rolled up magazines. The Ugandan woman explained that there was no market for her beads, so she had to work at a local quarry for less than a dollar a day. When the two American women brought some necklaces back to the US and gave them to some friends, a new market was born.

Paper beads are colorful and beautiful and come in many sizes and shapes. Because the market is strong in American, people purchasing these beads are helping women in another culture to survive and rise above the depravations of deficiency. As a result, a new cultural exchange market has been created.

The paper beads are created from recycled magazines, posters or other donated material that is cut, rolled and finished with a water-proof coating. The products made from the beads range from single strands of beads to delicate three strand necklaces.

There are many types of beads and they all come in a large variety of shapes, sizes and colours. They can be made from a variety of materials, including wood, semi-precious gemstones, plastics, metals and ceramics. Here’s a description of the most popular kinds of beads and the characteristics of each one.

Dichroic Beads: Are high end art beads that come in a numerous variety of colours and shapes. The beads are produced when multiple layers of metal oxides are applied to the surface of regular glass and then formed into beads. The colour you see in the bead depends on what metal oxides were used and how much was used. These beads are most impressive because due to the metal oxides, the colour seems to change depending on the angle it is viewed at.

Fire-polished Beads: Are made in the Czech Republic and are known for their high quality. They are faceted by a machine before being drawn through high temperature ovens. After they are removed from the oven and once the beads have cooled, their surface is very shiny. They come in a large variety of colours, shapes and sizes.

Fusible Beads: Are small, plastic and colourful beads that are placed on a special reusable pegboard to form a picture. They are then melted together using an iron. The beads come in a variety of colours while the pegboards come in a variety of shapes. They are very popular with children.

Lampwork Beads: Are handmade through a process of layering and adding different colours of glass to create a three dimensional bead. Since they are handmade, each bead is unique in colour, shape and size. Beads that have pictures on them are also called lampwork beads, even if they weren’t handmade.

Millefiori or Mosaic Beads: Thin rods of glass are bundled together and since each glass rod can be a different colour, you will see a design or pattern when you look at the ends of the rods. The bundle of rods are then fused together and sliced like a loaf of bread. These slices can then be placed on a glass bead while it is still hot. When the bead is finished it looks three dimensional because you can see the design, often a flower, in it.

Rondelle Beads: Are round, flat and can be made from a variety of materials. They are usually used as spacers in beadwork.

Since they are highly decorative they tend to give great visual interest to any piece they are added to.

Seed Beads: These are the most common type of bead and are ideal to use in stringing, looming and bead weaving. They are small, round and come in a variety of colours and sizes. Since they are mass-produced, they are uniformly shaped and consistent in colour.

Swarovski Crystal Beads: These crystals are machine cut to give precise angles and are often multi-faceted. They are well known for their sparkle and clarity, making them highly prized by many jewellers. They can have a high lead content, although it is now common to find them lead-free.

Orange is a festive colour. It has multiple benefits, the boldness of red coupled with the vibrancy of yellow. It has a bold and cheerful personality. Its colour meaning is associated with sunsets, dancing playful fires and carefree autumn leaves.

Orange Jewellery expresses full-bodied lust for life and no doubt attracts attentive curiosity. It’s so bright and full of vigor, that it can only be worn by those with confidence. We are attracted to orange jewellery for the exuberance designs, embodied with noticeable orange beads, crystals or gemstones.

Orange attracts us with its eye-catching flamboyant nature. It impresses fun and exudes playful energy. The flamboyancy is contagious. It expresses joy and thus is used as an antidepressant. Orange is also worn to encourage enthusiasm, vibrancy & youthful energy.

As a halfway mark between its red -yellow counterparts, it acts a very versatile colour. Team it with black clothing for a contrasting bold look. Steer towards exotic orange and bright pink for a chic bold statement. Create an appealing authentic look with burnt orange beads blended with cream pearls.

Olivine green crystals mixed with peridot and citrine gemstones and tangerine crystals is a very earthy combination. These look stunning with bronze jewellery and brass charms.

Orange is said to enhance and express creativity. Some jewellery designers wear orange for creative inspiration. The invigorating orange jewellery palette, is composed with orange crystals namely, Topaz, Sun, Fire Opal, Smoked Topaz and Light

Smoked Topaz. Gemstones also ignite the imagination. Semi-precious gemstones Amber and Burnt Topaz look stunning teamed between little black crystal and shiny sterling silver beads.

Making your own bead jewelry is a creative hobby that allows you to produce unique pieces for yourself, family and friends.

Here is how you can get started.

If you ever asked yourself “couldn’t I do that myself?” as you looked through rows of bead bracelets, necklaces or earrings at a trendy boutique, the answer is yes. Beading is a creative and entertaining hobby that not only will have you produce unique, handmade items of jewelry, but will also be a source of amazing gift ideas for family and friends.

The first step would be to find a good local bead shop. While there are wonderful mail order catalogs and websites that will

sell you all the supplies, nothing substitutes for the support and advice of experienced sales personnel. Ideally, this store would also offer a number of beginning classes that would help you learn basic techniques (if there is no bead shop in your town, some introductory books such as The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Beading will have to do).

Start with a simple project, such as a bracelet or basic necklace, and do not go overboard with expensive beads and findings (clasps etc.). I know you are probably itching to use Swarovski crystal, sterling silver and semi-precious beads, but you can work up to that later. Some stores will even offer packaged starter kits that may include a beading board (which helps you with project layout and measurements), some basic tools, beads, wire, findings and a how-to-book.

You should then set up your “beading space” – preferably an uncluttered, well-lit area. You might have to invest in a good lamp, maybe one combined with a magnifying lens. Remember, you will be stringing some rather tiny objects. Make sure you have enough containers to keep different types and colors of beads separate – nothing will spoil your joy of beading like having to hunt for a single bead in a jumbled pile. Beading stores will sell you various storage systems (including beading bags for

the beader-on-the-go), but you can also experiment with plastic containers meant to hold small hardware or fishing tackle.

Well, there you are ready for your first bead jewelry project. Don’t forget to protect your beading space from curious cats and toddlers. Happy beading!

Jessica loves the art of Murano glass. She wants to share this love with all of the people around the world.

Are you interested in Murano glass beads? In this article I am going to give you the 101 on the history of blown glass beads

from Murano Italy. There are many people that do not know the history of Murano glass beads. They just think that they are

pretty and fun to collect. Now let us talk about the history of blown glass beads from Murano Italy.

Creation Process

The creation process is extremely interesting to me. I have seen glass makers at the flea market blow glass but it’s just not

the same as the glass makers of Murano. First of all the maker will dip a small rough globe of molten glass into various

recipients that hold molten glass of various colors. The original globe will then begin to grow in size. After there is a

design created that is multi colored then the globe is placed in the mold. After this they will then dip the beads into

transparent molten glass. The reason that they do this is to make sure that they are shiny because otherwise they will have

an embossed finished.

The Beginning Of The Beads

Even though the beads are called Murano, they originally started out in Venice. Venice is only about 20 minutes away from

Murano. The reason that they moved the glass makers is because they thought the glass making was dangerous around all of the

wooden houses. Almost the whole city of Venice was wooden so you can see why they may want to move the danger away. All in

all these beads are beautiful and they are filled with history.

Jewellery findings are the seemingly insignificant but vitally important components of any type of jewellery making. Without crimp beads, for example, it would be difficult to get a professional looking finish to a necklace or bracelet clasp.

Jewellery findings are the solution to all jewellery making techniques, and as such a good understanding of their importance in your designs and work is essential.

The most common jewellery findings – earring wires, crimp beads, eyepins, headpins and clasps – are usually made of either silver wire or sterling silver. There are a plethora of other, more specialist findings (for watchstrap projects and more costume-based accessories), but let’s start with the basics.

Crimp beads should be an essential part of every jewellery maker’s toolbox, especial those working with beads. These simple (usually silver) beads are used to cover knots in the thread or to secure a loop in a necklace or bracelet string, making it possible to attach a jump-ring to the loop to complete a clasp. The metal is soft and once the crimp bead is in position, a pair of flat-nosed or crimping pliers can be used to compress the bead, securing it in place. It takes a little practice to

compress the finding without distorting it, so ensure that you apply the pressure evenly and gently. There are a variety of styles available, some smooth and others with a ‘rifling’ effect, which allows for good purchase when using the pliers.

If you are making earrings, silver findings are also something that should have a home in your equipment drawer. Earring wires come either with a loop on the end, allowing you to design ‘teardrop’ style designs with a bead or drilled pearl attached, or flat head ends, which support a bead or series of beads on the length of the wire. If you are making earrings, it is a worthwhile investment to use sterling silver findings, as some people can have an allergic reaction to the nickel coated wires. The sterling silver findings may cost a few pence more, but they give added value to your finished product and can prevent an unpleasant skin reaction in the wearer.

The one finding that everyone uses without exception is the humble jump ring. A simple circle of silver wire, it has a cut in its circumference, allowing the ring to be opened and pressed closed again. This allows the jump ring to act as a loop between the end of a necklace, for example, and the clasp. Without the jump ring, jewellery making becomes much harder! You can make your own jump rings by simply winding a piece of silver wire around an awl and then using very sharp snips to cut your rings free, but this can be wasteful and you cannot guarantee that your resulting rings will be perfectly circular. This will make them harder to crimp. Once the jump ring has been attached, it is then advisable to solder the join, preventing it from pulling open and breaking the connection between the end of the necklace or bracelet and the clasp.

It’s not just necklaces, earrings and bracelets that incorporate silver findings into their design. Jewellery making is a creative occupation, and there are thousands of different findings for every type of jewellery – from cheerful costume pieces to delicate filigree work and precious stone settings. A good jewellery supplier will carry a wide range of findings, both silver and carat gold. Once you get better at your craft, you can even start to design and create your own.
